GFAN Africa
The Global Fund Advocates Network (GFAN) Africa was established in 2011 to unite voices and efforts from across the continent in support of a fully funded Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Hosted by WACI Health and Impact Santé Afrique, GFAN Africa is a continent-wide movement of civil society organisations, community-led groups, youth networks, and health advocates working across more than 35 African countries, in English and French.
GFAN Africa exists because progress against HIV, TB, and malaria remains fragile, and the financing that sustains it is under growing pressure. Civil society brings accountability that institutions alone cannot, grounding health financing decisions in the lived experience of the communities they affect. GFAN Africa's vision is a world in which HIV, TB, and malaria no longer threaten lives, and all people in Africa can access equitable, sustainably financed health services grounded in human rights and community leadership.
Purpose
What We Do
As co-host of GFAN Africa, WACI Health convenes, connects, and amplifies civil society voices across the continent, creating shared spaces for advocates to strategise and act together, bridging national advocacy with regional and global policy spaces, and elevating community voices in rooms where they might otherwise be absent.
This includes leading political engagement with governments, diplomats, and regional bodies like the African Union; tracking and following up on health financing commitments to hold decision-makers accountable; and mobilising champions, journalists, parliamentarians, and public figures in support of health financing.
WACI Health also invests directly in the strength of the movement itself through running capacity-strengthening webinars, trainings, and peer-learning sessions for members, convening regular network meetings and regional strategy gatherings, and translating evidence into the compelling human stories that bring health financing decisions to life. During major mobilising moments, such as Global Fund replenishment cycles and regional summits, WACI Health coordinates advocacy campaigns that bring together community storytelling, media engagement, and direct outreach to decision-makers, ensuring lived experience remains central to the advocacy at every level.
WACI Health will continue to strengthen GFAN Africa's role as a bridge between national realities and global decision-making, deepen its work on domestic resource mobilisation as a complement to global solidarity, and ensure African community and civil society voices help shape the next era of global health financing and architecture.
